This mini unit focuses on developing children's vocabulary and conceptual knowledge essential to comprehending non-fiction texts. It uses the text ‘Habitats’ by William B. Rice and each lesson explicitly steps students through word building strategies from initial connections and labeling, to hands-on tasks, which build a rich vocabulary and broaden language. These lessons can also be completed as a stand alone lesson and with another text of choice making them effective strategies to reinforce meaning. They are suitable for both beginning and more fluent writers.
